We analyse the new situation facing e-commerce and discuss the business opportunities in this new digital ecosystem.
A week ago, the Spanish government decreed the
closure of all non-essential activities
to prevent the spread and contagion of the COVID-19 virus.
Faced with this situation, many companies were plunged into uncertainty and fear. But ultimately, e-commerce was able to continue operating, opening up a world of possibilities and new opportunities for all types of businesses.
This has made us realise that our shopping habits were already changing. However, with the arrival of coronavirus around the world, this change has accelerated to the maximum and consumers have been forced to drastically change their consumption behaviours, relying on online shopping for most of their day-to-day tasks.

The business opportunities in this new digital ecosystem are endless. As we said, people have discovered that they can exercise next to a window using an app without paying gym fees, and those who had not yet jumped on the e-commerce bandwagon have now done so. In addition, lockdown has introduced millions of people (and companies) to teleworking and has promoted the
rapid adoption of technological tools for communication and work organisation.
.
According to
Alibaba,
the number of grocery orders placed by users aged between 50 and 60 has quadrupled during this crisis, and Miss Fresh, another online retailer in China, claims that its users over the age of 40 have increased by 237% during the Covid-19 lockdown period.
In Spain, if we compare the week of 24 February 2019 with the same week in 2020, there has been a
60% increase in online sales of consumables,
and in France and Italy this figure already exceeds 80%.
This places us in a historic situation, with challenges that the global economy has never faced before, but also with great opportunities ahead.
The reality is that no one knows how long this lockdown and closure will last, so sitting idly by is not an option, while the data indicates that seeking opportunities in the digital sphere is.
Digital marketing has become essential in these times of crisis. We explain how to use it here:
